My "Kids" Are Gone...

Once again, it's been quite some time since I've blogged! This time, I have a pretty valid excuse! For those of you that don't know, I'm a recruiter and an event planner for a Law Firm in OKC. I absolutely love my job and what I love most about my job is what's happened over the last six weeks... it's the culmination of what I spend the rest of the year preparing for...

On May 14th, our Summer Associates arrived! These are my "kids" for the summer! They're law students from around the country that we have spent countless hours interviewing and choosing for our program! I looked at more that 350 resumes for these 11 spots, so needless to say, it's a highly coveted position.

Each year, we select a theme for the summer and try to plan our events according! Our theme this year was centered around our Firm and OKC being the best place for them to work! This was my second summer to complete and by far my most favorite! We really saw so much of what OKC has to offer and had some wonderful events! The "kids" (yes, most of them are my age or older, but, I really feel like their Mom when they're here, making sure everything is going smoothly!) were FABULOUS this year, hard workers and great fun to be around!

Here's a re-cap of what we did this summer!!!

Our "Welcome Aboard" party was an Oklahoma River Cruise and then a Thunder v. Lakers playoff watch party!

Next, they arrived for their first day for training and an In-House Happy Hour and we had a special appearance by someone special, Rumble, the OKC Thunder Mascot!!!

Two of my favorite people, The Recruiting Director and Assistant Recruiting Director, both wonderful attorneys!

Rumble had to brush up on his legal knowledge

Our next event was a Lunch & Learn at the OKC Museum of Art for a private tour of the Sketch to Screen Exhibit followed by a Attys vs Summer Associates softball game, complete with jerseys! (I'm all about a themed t-shirt!!!

Next was a Taste of OKC Happy Hour at a local establishment, McNellie's. Later that week, we had a Lunch & Learn at the Chesapeake Boathouse where we learned all about the future of our river and how it has just recently been named the Olympic training venue for Crew and Kayaking. The next week we had the former OKC mayor come in for a Lunch & Learn where he answered questions about the MAPS 3 project. It was a very interesting lunch that made everyone excited about living our wonderful city! We then had the 2nd Annual Lake Aluma Invitational, where we competed in backyard games such as croquet, badminton, ladder ball, bean bag toss, bocce ball and others. It was a great success and we couldn't have asked for a better night!

The next week our weekly Lunch & Learn consisted of a courthouse tour by a Judge and a lunch at a local deli. The next night we had an in-house happy hour to reveal the golf pairings for our Golf Outing the following day. I learned very quickly that it wasn't about who was the best, it was about who wasn't the worst, apparently these guys have not been out on the course in quite some time, it was rather comical!

We had a Taste of OKC at a fun place call Pops. It was a great long lunch on their patio where we all consumed too many "Pops" and unhealthy food. The next day, we had our summer associate/associate party that no shareholders or partners are allowed to. It's a very relaxed atmosphere and for the second year in a row, it was a themed party! Everyone had to dress as if they were "On A Boat", for those of you that don't watch SNL, it was based off a song/sketch that T-Pain did on there awhile back. Definitely not on my usual playlist and way too many curse words in it to make it a good song in my book but, nonetheless, it was our theme so, every one ran with the costumes, and I tried to go as themey and cheesy as possible with the decor!

We ended the summer with three of my favorite events events, Lunch with a Legend, with one of our very own Firm legends, Kam's Kookery for our small group dinners where everyone has dinner with their mentor attorneys for the summer and of course, our Final Dinner of the summer. This year, the final dinner was at Mickey Mantle's Steakhouse! It was delicious and a great way to end the summer. We had more than 100 people at this event. I had a slide show playing of all the pictures from the summer, we had a cocktail hour, dinner and during dessert, the recruiting director and myself passed out special gifts to each of our "kids" that told a little something about their time at the Firm. These gifts aren't meant to be funny and it's a fabulous way to send them off!!!
(awful, awful posture, but it's cute of him!!!)
Thanks to Jeff for being the most supportive husband during this crazy time every summer! He knows how much I love it but, it will be nice to not have to spend our summer nights running errands for work parties or getting things together for the week's events! We can now go on date nights that don't involve some sort of trip to a party supply store or somewhere of that nature!

It is a whirlwind of a summer but something that I thoroughly enjoy! Our Firm hires the best and brightest and in my mind, the most appreciative law students! They're wonderful and the past two days have been so quiet without them coming in and out of my office every 10 minutes!

If you made it this far, you deserve a cookie or something!!!
